How Faith-Driven Entrepreneurs Prioritize During Challenging Times

How I prioritized during a season of many significant challenges and the lessons I learned that can help you balance taking care of yourself and getting the most important things done.

I’ve been quiet for a while now so wanted to catch you up with what I’ve been up to…

In January, we moved my parents out of their home to a retirement “resort” and they got COVID right as it was time to move. They are all settled in, recovered from COVID, and LOVING their new place now.

Then in February, I had major foot surgery and have been getting around by knee scooter.

Since my surgery, I’ve taken time to rest and recover. I still have a ways to go but am now back to work (mostly) full-time.

Why Entrepreneurs Feel Overwhelmed And Burned Out

It was so fascinating how my brain chattered away at me…

  • “You have so much to do, you can’t take time off.”

  • “You’ll be fine, just get to work.”

  • “You’ll never get it all done if you don’t push yourself.”

These kinds of thoughts lead only to feeling overwhelmed, pushing past what we can sustain given our capacity and not honoring our valid needs.

And that, my friend, is a recipe for burnout.

Choosing A Way Forward Without Overwhelm

Allowing myself to see the thoughts my brain offered me on autopilot, let me consciously see that those were not going help me achieve a good result.

This awareness empowered me to make the conscious choice to prioritize taking care of myself, my family and my clients and let everything else wait.

Yes, you CAN do that!

You can drop the belief that you must do it all now. You don’t have to wear the “superwoman” mask and forge ahead at the expense of your well-being.

You can choose to honor and center what is most essential and just let all the rest wait until you have more capacity.

Finding Freedom and Focus in Challenging Times

And I’m so glad I chose that approach because instead of leading to overwhelm and burnout, it leads to freedom and focus.

I love coaching and I love my clients so it was a no-brainer to continue to serve my clients. Meeting with them recharges and inspires me. So I continued doing that.

But I let the other stuff wait…and guess what? Everything was fine! And I was able to recover faster than if I had been pushing myself.

Question for Reflection

Do you find it challenging to prioritize self-care or does that come naturally? If so, why? If not, why do you think it comes easily to you?

There’s no right or wrong answer… just curious how we all approach it. Would love to hear your approach and insights. And if you have any questions, I’d love to do my best to answer those.
